Many of the windows users use notepad++ as a text editor but unfortunately there is no mac version available for mac OSX. For mac user there are many alternative text editors. These are much powerful and versatile.

Emacs/Carbon
Carbon Emacs Package is a Mac-friendly distribution of the GNU Emacs text editor. It’s simple, extensible, and good for technically minded users who value the advanced features it offers. Not the most user friendly app, but worth bearing in mind. Also very similar is Aquamacs.
- Price: Free (Open Source)
- Requires: Mac OS X 10.5 or later
- Developer: Seiji Zenitani
Aquamacs
Aquamacs is an Aqua-native build of the powerful Emacs text editor. By "Aqua-native," we mean more than just the fact that this version of Emacs runs as a standard OS X application. Aquamacs features extensive customization: it will feel and behave mostly like an Aqua program - while still being a real GNU Emacs with all the ergonomy and extensibility you've come to expect from this world-class editor.
- Price: Free
- Requires: 10.6 or newer
- Developer: David Reitter
MacVim
MacVim is the text editor vim for Mac OSX. MacVim supports multiple windows with tabbed editing and a host of other features such as: bindings to standard OS X keyboard shortcuts (⌘Z, ⌘V, ⌘A, ⌘G, etc.), transparent backgrounds, full-screen mode, multibyte editing with OS X input methods and automatic font substitution,
ODB editor support etc.
- Price: Free
- Requires: 10.6 or higher
- Developer: Björn Winckler
TextEdit
TextEdit is a simple, open source word processor and text editor. It offers very basic functionality, but is bundled for free with OS X. Often great for quickly viewing a file, but it won’t satisfy many advanced requirements.
- Price: Free
- Requires: OS X (Any Version)
- Developer: Apple
Conclusion
It may be a good idea to combine a couple of the applications to provide a good mix between complicated code editing and a simple writing interface.
I’m interested to hear what you use, and whether you’d suggest any different applications.
A Plain Text Editor

That's right, if you're writer on a budget, you don't need to spend any money buying expensive writing software or apps. Instead, you can use the text editor that comes free with your operating system.
Just open up Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac. I like plain text editors for writing something short quickly and easily, without thinking much about it. I wrote a blog post about the benefits of using plain text editors as writing software.
Use for: writing whatever, wherever
